The Life and History of Craig Kielburger

Craig Kielburger is best known for being a famous Canadian activist for the rights of children. Kielburger is the founder of â€Å"Free the Children† and co-founder of â€Å"Me to We†. In 1995, Kielburger was twelve years old at the time when he saw a headline in the Toronto Star that read â€Å"Battled Child Labour, Boy, 12, Murdered. † The story was about a young Pakistani boy who was forced into bonded labour in a carpet factory at the age of four, and became an international figurehead for the fight against child labour by the age of twelve, but was brutally murdered in 1995.After Craig read this article, he began to research child labour, showed this particular article to his classmates and formed a group called â€Å"Twelve-Twelve-Year-Olds† which formed to â€Å"Free the Children†. This organization become international with 45 participating countries to help the world become a better place. In today's society, Craig's point of view can be im plemented by following in his footsteps to help and try making the world a better place and continuing to support his success with the organization he created, and realizing that you can make a difference if you believe in the fight that you want to stand up for.Craig Kielburger would be considered a pro-natalist point of view because in order to make a difference in the world, you need a lot of help to make the change and it starts by going small and growing big like Kielburger did with Free the Children. The more people that are involved, the greater the chances will be to make the change in society.Personally, I think that Kielburger’s idea with free the children can help solve the problem with this issue of child labour because he is trying to send the message out that child labour is wrong and no child show be forced to work and that children should be allowed to be children by playing, learning, and having fun. By Craig Kielburger and everyone that is in the organizatio n are making a difference in society for the children and hopefully murdering of children decreases as well as decreasing child labour in the whole world overall.

Were Stalin’s Purges in the 1930’s a success or a disaster?

By 1929, Joseph Stalin had become the undisputed leader of one of the largest populations in the world. He achieved this through a combination of political scheming, the mistakes of his opponents and the ingenious way in which he built up his power base. Stalin had great plans, but in order to execute them, he needed power. It seemed there was only one way to keep Russia in order – to control the people to such an extent that they would be afraid to even think of opposing him. Stalin, like Tsar Nicolas II before him, had trouble keeping this vast country in order. Soon, the terror increased, as Stalin tried to keep control and the death count rose. Was this really the way forward? By the end of the 1930s, terror and distrust reigned alongside Stalin. In 1934 the leader of the Leningrad Communist Party, Kirov, was murdered. Stalin used this as an excuse to purge his opponents and all opposition. It is now suspected that this move was pre-empted by Stalin, in order for him to be able to wipe out all resistance. Stalin was, however, never proved as the murderer, and kept the trust of his people. Soon, Stalin had appropriate reasoning to be able to purge most of the rest of the cabinet members, and arrested around 500,000 party constituents. After this, Stalin moved onto the army, concentrating on the officers. This move was not so clever, as this meant Stalin had eliminated not only threats, but possible help too. The purges were extended, and Stalin turned his attention onto university lecturers, teachers, miners, engineers, factory managers and even ordinary workers, just to stay in control. He achieved that, but little else it seems. Stalin lost all support which was not forced, and had to retrain officers and workers, to replace the ones imprisoned or dead. By 1937, an estimated 18 million people had been purged, with little reasoning as to why. The cracks began to show, as Stalin wiped out more and more people, to stay in authority of an ever-shrinking public. Although these Purges were villainous, Stalin had some reasoning behind them. His aims were more concentrated on the long term, in which all his opponents were destroyed, and Stalin had complete control. However, Stalin appeared to focus on one area of improvement at a time, as although the Purges helped him gain control, they also stopped improvement in other areas, such as becoming stronger. As Stalin had eliminated a lot of army officers, it meant that if Russia came under threat of war, the newly-trained soldiers would not be able to fight well, and could jeopardise the victory of any war. The Purges also effected Collectivisation, as Stalin purged many Kulaks, who worked on the land. This caused chaos in the countryside, as in anger the Kulaks burnt their crops and slaughtered their animals. In 1933 there was famine, as food production fell and starving peasants watched Communist officials sending food for export. A leader whose callous disregard for human life was matched only by his increasing paranoia, Stalin increased workloads for all workers However, once Collectivisation got under way, it was found to be a success. For peasants, the Purges were a triumph in some ways, as they were finally being treated fairly and equally. Collectivisation meant peasants were offered safe places to live, and had enough to eat, like all other people. Industrialisation also meant peasants were able to eat, as they were paid in food coupons, instead of real money. Though all Stalin's plans meant hard work for the Peasants, it was an easier way of life, and meant all communities lived and worked the same. Long term success' of the Purges are intertwined with the success of Collectivisation and Industrialisation, as it meant both could be achieved. For Stalin, it was also a huge help, as it meant a large proportion of the opposition were gone. This left the way clear to a supposedly brighter future, and new Russia. In conclusion, the Purges were seen as a failure as not only did the death toll reach around 18 million, just through Stalin's apparent insecurities but Russia was actually left weaker than before, with no army to lead them, and little food. As Stalin's grip on Russia became tighter, terror ruled the people.

This essay will discuss the Case study by firstly identifying four elements of contract, then justifying duties of Mr. Martin with applying the principles of pre-existing contractual duties. Finally a discussion about part payment of debt and promissory estoppel will be explained. Likewise, this essay will evaluate the knowledge of common law and agency relationship. QUESTION 1 a) Four essential elements of a contract should be Offer, Acceptance, Intention to create legal relations and Consideration. Firstly, offer, according to Adams(2012), is a full and clear statement of the terms†(p79) send to a party(the offeree) by another party(the offeror). Otherwise there could be a misunderstanding of an invitation to treat or negotiation which are similar statements. If an offer intends to be legally binding, acceptance, by which the offerees can show their agreement of all the terms of the offer, is needed. Acceptance needs to be valid and informing the offeror, while the terms should as same as the previous ones. Another element, i.e. consideration, aims to make sure the promise made is of value. As defined by Jones (2011), the consideration needs to give benefits to the one, who is suffering a loss at the same time. Last but not least, while making an agreement to be legally enforceable, intention to create legal relations is important. While judging whether it is a binding contract or not, the situation to make this contract needs to be considered, in other words, according to Adams(2012), contract made in a domestic or social environment will not be legally bound. When consider the part payment of debt, it is necessary to concern the rule in Pinnel’s Case(1602), by which illustrated that part payment is not a sufficient consideration. Because debtors obtains a benefit with giving nothing of value to the creditors. In Marin’s case, Bob agreed to accept a lower payment( £350) in full settlement despite of any excuse Mr. Marin has used. Obviously, Mr. Martin got a benefit of  £400, whereas Bob gained nothing. As such, five (5) managers in Sheraton Dongguan Hotel, specifically those in the position of designing or implementing strategies, are planned to be interviewed. Terms of my knowledge Essay In answering to handout 6, I would like to begin with stating that cognitive is private, yet I believe it is psychologys job investigate the phenomenon. To that extent I will use all my acquired knowledge from this class to discuss my interpretations and doubts with handout 6. For the most part I agree that we have set boundaries on what is me or you, although I am having trouble understanding the concept in terms of my knowledge. But I am aware that in order for me to identify me as a self then the other people must have selfs too, yet I do not know if this is was the handout is trying to explain. I believe this is like the idea that if there is good, there must be evil, for one cannot exist without the other. For example, Watson believed the mind was associated with the idea of a soul, which did not fit into science. He wanted scientific results and reactions all of which the mind had no power over and could not do. For Watson the mind could not think because thinking was not observable, therefore he did not accept the mind in this theory. In addition, Watson despised the notion of mind because it gave meaning to self , which also had no place in science. In this sense, Watson wanted to use matter and energy that were useful to him and produced visible results. He had no use for spirits and ideas because those were nothing, and consisted of conjugated notions that people had identities. For this matter he did not like the self set boundaries because they too were not visible. Like in Dr. Wapners story is cognitive because it is based on one individual personal experience. His feelings and emotions for scientific proposes in the story were not observable which means that Watson, would have rejected the story from any psychology class. The story is an example of desire, which can only be felt by the self/ mind and is identifiable by human cognition. The story was written in with a certain identity and acknowledgment of self that became evident in Dr. Wapners need to diet and skip desserts. In addition to the emotions of anticipation, shock, nerves, and anxiety transpired throughout the story are all synonymous to the mind. The cravings observed by the fact that the Eskimo Pie had been secretly hidden for emergencies gave the notion that the self needed comfort in knowing it had support. Whereas behaviorist would have dismissed the cravings in the story because they are unattainable, like the mind and have no scientific base. In addition to Dr. Wapner feeling pressure of not having dessert was building up inside him. The ice cream was needed to function and Dr. Wapners awareness of his need for ice cream was cognitive privacy. I will use Dr. Wapner story because I can really distort it apart and it works well in my paper. But Dr. Wapners need for dessert was private from all the members of his family, and although there was an advantage to his cognitive privacy this can back fire. I can very simply identify myself as having an identity and be able to distinguish a pencil from a pen, but who is to say that is was not the pencil who distinguishes it self. I am trying to agree that just because we as people have selfs and identities that does not make other objects lesser than us. I believe that in psychology, although it is the study of the mind, we are very self centered and concentrate too much on the small things. As people we are so ego centric that we many time fail to see beyond was our perception and eyes show us, but that topic is for a different paper. Moving on to our self identity and how we define it, I will use my one year old son as an example since he is on the verge of defining his persona. Although it is true that he still has not fully developed a sense of time or space, and that many times he will act on his impulse without regard to the world around him. He is slowly learning how not to do certain things which may have a bad result. For example, I have been teaching him to eat fruit and he has caught on well and likes most fruits accept for oranges. He is very good at eating very thing I give him but he has now learned to differentiate the orange when he looks at it. And every time he see it, hell make a funny face like if I had given him lemon. Now I realized this is something small, but he is developing self identity and he is now telling me what he likes and does not like. I think it is important for psychology to be aware a notion of the self and identity. I do not know if I am right on the spot which is what Dr. Wapner wanted me to understand. I would really like to know if I am on the right track, because it is important for me understand this so that I can incorporate it into my life. The Hobbit | Summary and Analysis The Hobbit is an exciting fantasy about a hobbit that goes on the most fantastic adventure of his life. Bilbo (hobbit) goes to Middle Earth to seek the long lost treasure. Along the way, Bilbo encounters new friends, strange wild beasts, unlimited amount of danger, and temptation. The plot of this magnificent fantasy fits the quest pattern from the beginning, all the way to the end. The characters contained within the words of this novel fir the archetypal characters in every way. IN addition, the settings of this particular adventure have something magical and enchanted about them. These are the elements required to having the perfect quest, and The Hobbit contains all these elements. Therefore, The Hobbit is a very good example of a monomyth. The plot of this book contains three distinct phases: departure, initiation, and return. The departure phase often contains the call to adventure, the refusal, a supernatural aid, and crossing the first threshold. The call to adventure in this novel occurs when one day, Gandalf appears and asks Bilbo to go on an adventure with him in the following manner: Im looking for someone to share in an adventure that Im arranging [p.6]. There is also a refusal of the call, We are plain quiet folk, and have no use for adventures [p.6]. The supernatural aid is Gandalf, the wise old wizard, and when the dwarves and Bilbo encounter the trolls, [p.34-41] Gandalf comes and helps them and saves them all, and the first threshold is crossed. Bilbo and the dwarves can now move on. After the departure, Bilbo and the dwarves undertake an initiation, and are captured many times and almost killed if it were not for Bilbo. In a typical quest, readers expect to find evil characters that must be outwitted or defeated by the hero. Bilbo defeats Gollum in the riddle contest and when Gollum decided to kill Bilbo, Bilbo uses the magic ring to become invisible and follows Gollum out of the caves [p.70-84]. Next, the goblins capture the adventurers and after the escape of Bilbo and his friends, the goblins join armies with the Wargs and are ready to cremate them when the Eagles come and save the dwarves, the wizard and Bilbo [p.99-100]. The trolls that catch the dwarves in sacks, are read y to roast them and ear them when Gandalf appears uses his brain and saves them all [p.37-42]. The Hobbit conforms to this by focusing on Bilbos journey but the object (treasure) doesnt restore the calm but instead creates conflict. In The Hobbit Thorin and his cousin nearly declare war but are forced to join in an attempt to stop the Goblin army. With this evidence it is obvious that the quest was not aimed to destroy evil and it even started conflict. The quest in The Hobbit strays from the criteria of a typical fantasy story. Every protagonist in any genre encounters obstacles throughout story but the reasons for these obstacles change depending on the genre. A dramatic story would use obstacles as a method to exemplify the feeling of the character or his/her flaws while a fantasy story would use obstacles as a test for to prove the character is worthy or expedient. For example, Bilbo encounters three trolls and tries to pickpocket an object from one of the trolls but he is discovered and captured in his attempt. This obstacle couldve been made to show that Bilbo is not yet a master of stealing and how he still needs to improve before his convergence with Smaug. Most of the elements in The Hobbit successfully combine to create a suitable plot and structure for a fantasy novel. The Hobbit doesnt completely demonstrate the features of a fantasy story mainly due to the themes and values in the story. In a fantasy quest Tradition values are fought for (Glasson, 1955, p. 55). Throughout The Hobbit values are not fought for. For example, Bilbo believed in a simple and harmonious life that is adventure free but as he doesnt fight for what he believes in and ends up accepting Gandalfs request. The soldiers felt as if they could not tell the whole truth about the war through their eyes to their loved ones at home. The soldiers that they were with all the time understood the pain and confusion each other felt, yet no one talked about it. War changed how people had relationships with others. War could bring people closer or tear them apart. The relationships between the soldiers and their families grew or forced them to become distant. The soldier did not want to worry his parents at home and knew that they would not understand what he was going through. In the Documentary Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam, directed by Bill Couturie, showed these relationships change. One soldier writes to his mother and tells her that for a second, he felt as if he was on vacation because it was so beautiful in Vietnam. One had to think that this man wrote this to his mother only for her to worry less. He did not want to tell her the whole truth on what was really going on inside of him. Would anyone from the outside world understand? "P.S. tell mom not to worry, there is nothing I can't handle." The soldiers could handle the physical horrors that were happening to them, but the mental status of many the soldiers were becoming breakable. How could you tell someone not to worry about you, when you do not even care what was going t o happen to yourself. The soldiers were all prepared to die, but waiting was what was driving them crazy. They did not want to tell their 17-year-old girlfriend at home this because she would never understand. How do you tell someone that you love that you are loosing your mind and do even know who the enemy is anymore? Downplaying the whole war situation to your loved one was the only way to keep yourself sane and not make them worry too much about you. All of the men were scared, yet did not know how to show it. How Issues Are Affected By the Political Spectrum

On April 30, 1789, the United States of America elected our first president to lead our country. Then every four years thereafter, another president is elected. When election time comes around most Americans do not know anything about the issues involved and/or do not even know who is running. The two current candidates this year are Al Gore, the Democrat, and George Bush, the Republican. Three main issues that both parties deal with are Social Security, Tax Reform, and Education. Depending on each candidate†s political platform, they can be placed approximately on the political spectrum. Knowing where a candidate stands on the political spectrum, you can assume how he would feel on certain issues. Social Security is a huge issue this year because many citizens are concerned that they are paying the social security tax, but with the current plan, the money will run out by the time they get old enough to use it. Al Gore plans on taking social security and putting it aside and adding the interest gained to it which in his words, â€Å"I will keep it in a lockbox. The interest savings, I would put right back into it. That extends the life for 55 years† (Issues2000. om). Gore†s plan relates to the liberal side of the political spectrum. Normally most liberals believe in more government involvement and less big corporations. He is saying that the social security tax will go into a â€Å"lockbox† and no money will be taken out of it leaving it all to the government. â€Å"Today liberals view government as protecting individuals from being abused by a variety of governmental and nongovernmental forces, such as market vagaries, business decisions, and discriminatory practices† (Burns 243). This leads into why George Bush is a conservative. He plans on taking social security and putting it into the hands of our citizens and allowing them to invest their money in stocks. Bush wants to take the money out of the government†s hands and put it in the individual†s hands. â€Å"†¦ I†m going to trust [young workers] at their option to be able to manage, under certain guidelines, some of their money to get a better rate of return so that they†ll have a retirement plan in the future†¦ † (issues2000. com). Basically he is trying allow the â€Å"young workers† to control their social security rather than the government. This issue shows how two different sides of the political spectrum can affect the way they attack a problem. Tax Reform is another issue where both candidates differ greatly. Al Gore believes there should be a tax cut for the lower class and middle class families, but not for the wealthy class. This is true for a normal liberal to say. They believe the government should help those who are in need and leave those who don†t alone. â€Å"Liberals†¦ prefer that government take care of the weak, for the strong can nearly always take care of themselves† (Burns 244). With Gore†s plan, the typical family†s taxes would be the lowest in fifty years. This is definitely taking care of the weak part of society, the typical family. Bush, on the other hand, says he wants a tax cut for everyone. He believes everyone should deserve a tax relief, not just the middle class. This sounds good, but really the biggest cut would be in the upper class, who really do not need a tax cut. This just shows how Bush is being conservative by helping the big businesses, which make up most of the upper class. â€Å"Traditional conservatives, in the name of freedom, are emphatically pro-business† (248). Each candidate tries to show why their tax reform plans are better, but it just comes down to how each candidate relates to the political spectrum. Another big issue this year is Education. Both candidates feel differently about this issue. Al Gore believes that students who attend a failing school would be allowed to go to better school until that school is reopened under new management. He also says that schools that are doing poorly in student achievement would be given a fund to help them improve. Any progressing school would be given financial awards to help them strive to become better. This is considered a liberal view because he is saying that any weak school will be helped out by the government. In addition, he is supporting the improvement of some schools that are not meeting the standards. George Bush agrees somewhat, but he believes that if a school is failing, they have three years to fix the problems. If they don†t, they will be shut down and are demanded to give some money towards sending the students to other schools. He also says he would require testing be done every year. The schools that improve would get a bonus while the schools that are failing would lose some federal funds (English handout). Conservatives are also inclined to believe that those who fail in life are in some way the architects of their own misfortune and thus must bear the main responsibility for solving their own problems† (Burns 247). He is conservative by saying that the responsibility of failing schools is to fix the problems themselves. Some parts of this issue, education, Gore and Bush agree on but for the most part, they are like on two different sides of the political spectrum. Knowing where the candidate is located on the political spectrum, each issue can be related to how the candidate feels. Even though there are many issues a soon-to-be president has to discuss, there are definitely three main issues that affect everyone somehow. They all show a definite side of the political platform by each candidate. Each candidate†s side was relating to one side of the political spectrum such, as Democrats tend to be liberal, while Republicans are considered conservative. Referring back to the first paragraph, maybe we should model after our ancestors back when majority of our citizens actually cared about who was running and how they felt on the issues.

He was known for his 1993 Economic Plan, which cut taxes on 15 million low-income families and made tax cuts available to 90 percent of small businesses, while raising taxes on just 1. 2 percent of the wealthiest taxpayers. On the contrary, he also was known for his scandal with Monica Lewinsky. He was now committing acts of perjury. Clinton also influenced witnesses of his trail to vogue for him in front of the court of law. Though Lewinsky could have been lying about being touched by President Clinton, there is a lot of hard evi dence supporting otherwise. The acts that President Bill Clinton bestowed upon Monica Lewinsky were immoral. Monica Lewinsky was hired to work was an intern at the White House during Clinton's first term.During this time she had allegory formed a relationship with him, which was later proved true after a 21-day senate trail. In 1991 Paula Corbin Jones, a former Arkansas state worker claimed President Clinton had confronted her sexually when he was serving as governor of Arkansas. She later filed a sexual harassment lawsuit on the president; which was followed by a federal court hearing. In President Clinton’s testimony, he denied having any type of affair with Lewinsky. Lewinsky also denied to having such a relationship. President Clinton and Lewinsky both claimed to be strictly co-workers and nothing more.Kenneth Starr came forward with compelling information regarding the Lewinsky Scandal. Starr had telephone conversations recorded by Linda Tripp, in which Lewinsky describe d her association with the president. Hillary Clinton claimed that a â€Å"vast right-wing conspiracy† was trying to put an end to her husband, while Republicans and conservatives described him as immoral and a liar. As a President of The United States of America one is expected to be professional and honest. The actions that President Clinton commits not appropriate, though, people are simply human, when in position of power here is a time when situations like this are completely and utterly unacceptable.Impeachment was in order to prevent President Clinton from continuing on his presidency after being guilty of adultery and perjury. President Clinton was under oath when he denied having sexual relations with Lewinsky. Clinton was acquitted by the Senate on February 12, 1999. Clinton denied telling his aides actual lies about the nature of his relationship with Lewinsky, even though secretaries reported that he told them that he did not have sex in any form specifically incl uding oral sex with Lewinsky. Article I states that Clinton lied to the grand jury about ‘his corrupt efforts to influence the testimony of witnesses’† (An Analysis 1) Clinton's secretaries, who had no reason to lie about it, reported that he denied having sexual relations with Lewinsky. He lied and hoped that these men would repeat these lies, as well as their attacks on the honor of OIC. Clinton had committed two acts of perjury. The first was Perjury #1A: Undefined Sex. Paula Jones' lawyers asked whether Clinton had had a â€Å"sexual affair† with Lewinsky. He answered no.His lawyers argue that Clinton believes â€Å"sexual affair† means â€Å"sexual intercourse. † However, to its true definition it is. So, Clinton’s testimony was a lie. The second act was Perjury #1B: Defined Sex. Paula Jones' lawyers handed Clinton a now famous definition of â€Å"sexual relations† â€Å"contact with the genitalia, anus, groin, breast, inne r thigh, or buttocks of a person with intent to arouse or gratify the sexual desire of any person† and asked whether he'd had these sorts of relations with Lewinsky. Clinton answered no. Kenneth Starr asked Clinton the same question before a grand jury, and again Clinton answered no.Clinton's lawyers point out that â€Å"this narrow definition did not include certain physical acts. † This, of course, is an indirect way of saying that it doesn't include oral sex. What about Lewinsky's claim that Clinton touched her breasts? Clinton's lawyers admit that if Lewinsky is correct then Clinton perjured himself. The day after Clinton's deposition in the Jones Case, he discussed his relationship with Lewinsky to his personal secretary, Betty Currie. According to Currie's testimony, Clinton said, among other things, â€Å"We ere never really alone,† â€Å"You could see and hear everything,† â€Å"Monica came on to me and I never touched her, right? † and â₠¬Å"She wanted to have sex with me and I can't do that. † These statements could easily be seen as an attempt to make sure any future testimony by Currie squared with Clinton's. In Clinton’s testimony in the Jones case, Clinton made several references to Currie as Lewinsky’s close friend, almost alluring the lawyers for Jones to depose her. This suggests that in his conversation with Currie the next day he was focused on preparing her to testify falsely, should she be added to the deposition list in the Jones case.It is also possible that Clinton had a second conversation along the lines of his first after he learned that the OIC was investigating his possible perjury in his Jones deposition. Betty Currie visited Lewinsky's home and collected gifts given to her by the President, which she then stored under her bed in her own home. It seems likely that Currie would not have taken this action without Clinton asking her to do so. If he did, it would be an attempt to avoid having the gifts obtained by the OIC through an order it could be seen as an attempt to hide evidence.
